Dear Members,

Welcome to the August edition of ‘The Tennis Captain’s Newsletter’! I hope you are all having a lovely summer and enjoying the current glorious weather. It’s a quiet time of the year so this is a short newsletter! This is a quick summary of events over the past month and some upcoming events to be aware of. Please contact me if you have any questions or want to know more about any of these events. Club events are also published on our website and on Facebook and Instagram.

Quote of the month;

“Once you start believing in yourself, anything is possible. Once you start believing in yourself, your dreams take shape. The more you believe, the more you achieve.” Martina Navratilova

1.  Social Tennis

Social tennis is ongoing most Fridays! It has been wonderful to see it continue over the summer with at least three courts in use most Fridays. Thank you to the Tennis Committee members for keeping it going. Do consider coming in and encouraging your friends also, it’s a lovely social evening where you might meet some members you haven’t seen in a while or haven’t met before. All grades are welcome to attend, €5 for tennis and pizza! This is the sign up link

Alternatively, you can sign up using the link on the club website or you can use the QR code on the Social Tennis poster on the main notice board in the clubhouse. There is a tennis committee member on site every Friday to run the evening.

The next dates are;

August 15th

August 22nd

August 29th

September 5th

September 12th

2. Summer Cup 2025

We entered 9 teams in this year’s competition.

3. Mary Collins Charity Day

The Mary Collins charity day will be held in the Club on Saturday, August 30th from 12 midday until 4pm. This is an annual fun filled, charity ladies’ doubles event open to clubs in Cork City followed by food and chats in the clubhouse. This year’s event is being kindly sponsored by EY. Here is the sign up link

Thank you to Laia Raigal and Noelle Twomey for running the event again this year.

All proceeds from the day will go to Edel House, which provides emergency accommodation for women and children in need.

Entry opened on July 5th for Sunday’s Well members.

4. Senior Close Championship 2025

The Annual Close Championship will take place from Sunday, September 14th to Friday, September 19th. The sign up will open next Tuesday the 19th of August and will close on Saturday 30th of August with withdrawal deadline on Sunday 31st of August.

The Senior Close is the Club’s annual internal close championship. Members can pick their own partners, the grades are split into 3 different groups all of which (depending on entry numbers) will have singles, doubles, and mixed draws.

  • Grade 1,2,3

  • Grade 4,5

  • Grade 6

To remind everyone the G1,2,3 group grades must add up to a minimum of 4; two G2’s can play together or a G1 and a G3 but not a G1 and G2. In the G4, 5 grouping the sum of both grades must equal a minimum of 9; so two G4’s cannot play together, it must be a combination of a G4 and a G5.

On Finals night (Friday 19th) there will be a BBQ and a disco, so wipe the dust off your dancing shoes and see you on the night!

5. Junior Close Championships 2025

The Junior Close will take place from Friday September 19th to Sunday September 21st. This overlaps with the Senior Close but this will not in any way affect the times in either tournament. Please keep an eye out for an email about entry details in the next few days. Entry will probably open late next week.

6. Members achieving upgrades.

Congratulations to Beth Noonan on her upgrade to Grade 5, to Doris Murphy, Zita O’Dwyer and Simon Fitzgerald on their recent upgrade to Grade 3, and to Kevin Quirke Jnr on his upgrade to Grade 1! Well done to you all, super achievements.

7. Congratulations!

Congratulations to all members who represented themselves, the club, the province and the country over the past month. There have been incredible games, matches and wins both at Junior and Senior levels. Well done to you all! The club social media has been buzzing with your achievements over the past few weeks. I’m afraid I will miss someone if I start listing names so please forgive me! Definitely ‘Proud of our Club’!
