Dear Members,
Before I begin, as this is my final newsletter as tennis captain, I would like to sincerely thank you all for the support and friendship you have offered to me over the past year. It has truly been an honor to serve as tennis captain of our wonderful club, and I will forever hold this experience in my heart. So, for the last time, this is a brief overview of last month’s events and a look ahead to what’s on the horizon for the next few weeks. Please contact me until the AGM (Feb 24th) or the office if you have any questions or want to know more about any of these events. Club events are also published on our website and on Facebook and Instagram.

1. Friday Night Social Tennis
Social tennis is in full swing most Fridays, and it’s great to see members (both familiar faces and newcomers) signing up and taking part each week. A big thank you to the Tennis Committee members for keeping this great tradition going. We encourage you to come along and invite your friends too. It’s a wonderful, friendly evening filled with great tennis, lots of laughs and a super club atmosphere. It’s also a great opportunity to meet members you may not have seen in a while or have not met before! All grades are welcome, and the cost is €5 for tennis and pizza! Great value!! This is the sign up link
Alternatively, you can sign up using the link on the club website or you can use the QR code on the Social Tennis poster on the main notice board in the clubhouse. There is a tennis committee member on site every Friday to run the event.
The next dates are;
- February 13th
- February 20th
- February 27th
2. Tennis Munster Winter League Phase 1
The Winter League is now in the knockout stages and we have 2 teams in the finals! Congratulations to Dee’s Grade 1 ladies who after a great win yesterday will play their final in St Michael’s against Nenagh on Saturday 21st of February at 2pm and to Alymer’s Grade 1 men’s team who will play their final against Whitechurch in Ballinlough Tennis Club on Sunday February 22nd at 10am. I know the players very much appreciate support so please try and support our teams in St Michael’s and Ballinlough. All the information about the matches will be on our social media the Friday/Saturday of the weekend the matches are happening.
3. Tennis Munster Winter League Phase 2
Eight teams have been entered in Phase 2 (mixed doubles) of the Winter League and there are matches in the club nearly every weekend. Club support makes all the difference, so if you’re free any weekend we’d love for you to come down to the club and cheer on our home teams. The atmosphere is always great (can’t say the same about the weather!!) and the players really appreciate the encouragement. Match details will be posted on our social media and on the club WhatsApp group before the matches take place. For your info the finals will be in May.
4. American Tournaments
The final American Tournament of this season took place on Friday January 16th and it was an evening filled with great tennis, craic and laughter. Many thanks again to Anne Keane and to Karen Keneally for all the work and dedication they have put into organising these very popular and fun tournaments over the past few months. Congrats to Jennifer Haugh and Kevin McCarthy on being the top scorers on the night!
5. Internal Winter League 2026
The Internal Winter League will commence on Saturday February 21st at 5pm. Thank you to all who signed up, unfortunately the places were limited but hopefully if you weren’t placed on a team you will be called upon to sub. For information, there are five teams of eight (4 men and 4 women) named after places within the club and they will play four round robin matches. The top four teams will play a 3⁄4 playoff and finals.
The finals will be played on Saturday April 18th. This usually overlaps with the Ladder Cup finals and in previous years there has been a Ladder Cup dinner. This year we are changing things up and we have a Spring Social planned for the 18th, this will be a BBQ and hopefully a DJ. So, mark off the date in your calendar, come and see some great tennis, enjoy a burger, a boogie and meet your friends!
6. Munster Masters Tour 1000 2026
The Munster Masters will take place in Sunday’s Well from Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th of March. Thank you to Marie Duffy and Ger Flynn for organising and running this tournament and to our sponsors Arachas Insurance. The Masters is always a great event in the club calendar and I would encourage you to go into the club over the weekend to see some high level tennis.

Entries will be open on 25th February at 1pm.
7. Munster Senior Tour 1000 2026.
The Sunday’s Well Open or more correctly The Munster Senior Tour 1000 will take place from May 12th to May 24th. Thank you to our Tournament Referee Ger Flynn and to our Tournament Directors Valerie Carroll, Kevin McCarthy, Claire Fennell and Maria Crowley for all their hard work organising this amazing tournament. Please keep an eye on tournament software and the club WhatsApp for the opening date. This year’s competitions will be graded differently because of the new ITN system.
8. International Honors
Huge congrats to our members who have been selected to play for our country on the international stage. I promised a full and comprehensive list in this month’s Newsletter but unfortunately I don’t have all the names yet and I don’t want to leave anyone out!
8. Intervarsities
The Intervarsities took place in the club last week, from Thursday February 5th to Saturday February 7th. It had been ten years since UCC hosted the Intervarsities and despite the awful weather on Thursday and Friday the UCC committee ran a super event. Nine colleges were represented with a total of thirty nine teams including six from UCC. The overall winners were UCD in both the mens and ladies with UCC reaching the semifinals in the ladies. Congratulations to captains Beth and Luke and your committee on a fantastic event, well done!
9. Junior Tennis Update
Our U12 and U14 teams are currently competing in the Carrigaline Cup. It’s great to see our juniors playing competitive tennis and enjoying the match experience. We also have a team in Phase 2 of the green baller U11 Regional Cup. The best of luck to all our teams! Term 3 sign up will be out in the next few weeks and the Easter Camp (30th March to 2nd April) is almost full. Matchplays are continuing on Fridays and are proving very popular.
10. WhatsApp Group
The WhatsApp group is proving very useful and we are getting really positive feedback from members. It has been great to use the group to highlight the Winter Leagues games and share updates with you all. The group now includes over 370 club members. If you haven’t joined you can still do so using the link below. To reiterate, email will still be the main form of communication from the club.
Sunday’s Well WhatsApp community
For the last time I would like to wish you all a great month of tennis!
